Welcome to CanBoat I Oceanside, formerly known as Nanoose Power and Sail Squadron and a special welcome to the folks from Port Alberni who have amalgamated with us.
Our new local name comes at the same time as the national branding changed to CanBoat – Nauti Savoir (from CPS-ECP).
We are on break for the summer as many of us have boats and want to enjoy some time on the water. In the fall, we will resume our normal programming with social events and a VHF course.
If you have questions or concern, or would like to help out, just reach out to us and we will get back to you.
Safe Boating!

BOATING COURSES
In the Basic Navigation & Boat Handling Courses you are introduced to the art of navigation, anchoring, ropes, lines and knots – not to mention what to expect when the boat is moving under power. We also explore navigation further as you learn how to plot and label on paper charts as well as what the skipper should be doing before setting out and when under way, handling a boat under sail as well as your environmental responsibilities and electrical hazards. Electronic navigation is also covered.
These are offered as separate modules.
MARITIME RADIO one day course
All operators of a VHF radio are required to have a Restricted Operators Certificate (Maritime).
The Maritime Radio course provides training on emergency radio procedures along with everyday operating techniques. Subjects learned include the use of the VHF radio, choice of frequencies, operation, phonetic alphabet, procedural words and phrases as well as Digital Selective Calling (DSC) and the Global Maritime Distress and Safety Systems (GMDSS). This program is overseen by Industry Canada.
Stay tuned for 2025 events!

Nanoose Squadron was formed in 1992 as a breakaway group from Ballenas Squadron to the north. In 2016, Ballenas Squadron was unable to get enough volunteers to fill the essential executive roles and it surrendered its Warrant, and its members transferred into Nanoose Squadron.
In 2024 CPS-ECP introduced its new brand name CanBoat and a new logo.
The Nanoose Squadron executives had been discussing a possible name change for some time and decided to take the opportunity to do this as part of the national rebranding program.
Our area includes Nanoose, Errington, Coombs, Parksville, French Creek, Qualicum Beach, Qualicum Bay, Bowser, and Deep Bay so Oceanside was the obvious choice.
Nanoose has a population of under 7,000 compared to Oceanside’s population is over 60,000.
Following a poll of our members, a special general meeting was held on November 25th 2024 which gave approval for us to request the CPS-ECP board to change from Nanoose to Oceanside. The Board approved the request in December 2024.
In January 2025 we changed our logos and advertising materials and our website became www.canspace-oceanside.ca
In March 2025, the Port Alberni Squadron was dissolved and its remaining members transferred to CanBoat Oceanside.
We currently have about 90 members.
